What is an Arborist?

Arborists are critical to the health and maintenance of the environment. By definition, Arborists are professionals who specialize in the care and maintenance of trees. Arborists are the professionals you should call if you have tree-health-related concerns, need help diagnosing and treating tree health issues, need trees or stumps removed, or want help with pruning and maintaining your trees so they are healthy for years to come.

You may be wondering, are arborists the same as foresters? Not quite. Although they both work with trees, their focuses are different. Arborists are different from foresters as they are concerned with the health and removal of trees, while a forester focuses on groups of trees and how they interact with surrounding infrastructure.

What is an ISA Certified Arborist?

ISA Certified Arborists are arborists who have a minimum of three years of relevant experience, have successfully completed an examination, and complete continuing education credits to maintain the certification every three years. ISA Certified Arborists are highly skilled and trained arborists who have the knowledge and ability to provide tree services at the highest level.

When deciding who to hire as your arborist, ask about their ISA Certification and look for the ISA Certification badge on their website and emails. Although becoming certified is voluntary, most reputable arborists should be ISA-certified as it provides a standardized method of judging expertise in tree care. When you hire an ISA-certified arborist, you are guaranteed to be working with a credible, reliable, and reputable arboriculturist.

Certified arborists are widely recognized professionals due to their extensive education and training in plant health and care including:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of your landscape problems
  • Proper pruning and management techniques for your valuable landscape plants
  • Understanding tree biology
  • Identifying and selecting the appropriate plants for your landscape
  • Installation and establishment of plants to enhance your landscape
  • Understanding the delicate soil and water relationships that affect plant health
  • Nutrition requirements and fertilization techniques to keep your plants in peak form
  • Recognizing tree hazards and construction damage
